The House is a Mess! What to Do?
The phone rings and it’s Aunt Martha saying she’s in the area and wants to stop by for a visit. OMG! It’s Thursday and you normally clean on Saturday. The house is a mess. What do you do? What CAN you do?
Calm Down, Take a Deep Breath
First, what rooms will Aunt Martha be seeing? Ignore all areas that will remain out of sight. Choose the main room where you want to entertain her, maybe the kitchen or the living room. Now you only really have to take care of those areas. Start by removing the clutter. Gather it all up in armfuls or baskets and put it somewhere else (the garage, a closet, the bedrooms).
Next, give the guest bathroom toilet a brush and a flush. Wipe off the toilet seat and the counter. Windex the mirror.
But the house is still a mess!
Remove dust from the tops of tables and shelves. Don’t take much time on this, just hit the highlights. There is still time so run the vacuum through the traffic areas or a dust mop or Swiffer over hard surface floors. This is one time when you are cleaning for appearance, not health. Don’t pick things up to dust underneath, just dust around decorative items.
Little Things Mean a Lot
Now everything is presentable. In the few remaining minutes, light a scented candle or two. Wipe up the counter in the bathroom and lay out fresh hand towels.
Follow these simple tips and you can go from “this house is a mess” to “Hi Aunt Martha! I’m so glad to see you!” Put on a pot of water for tea and you will be able to relax and enjoy your special time with Aunt Martha.
