Mayonnaise is, in general, an emulsion of egg yolk, oil, and either vinegar or lemon juice. We slather it on sandwiches and use it as the base for yummy dips. But mayonnaise is also a great tool for taking care of things in and around your home. You can wipe a small amount of mayo onto plant leaves. It will leave behind a beautiful luster. It will also stop squeaky door hinges. Just apply a small amount to the hinges and work it back and forth a little. The squeak will disappear. An added advantage is that your room will not have the unpleasant odor of WD40!
We all get rings on our fine wood furniture left behind by sweaty glasses. Rub some mayonnaise into the affected area and buff in the direction of the grain. Do you have an old piano with ivory keys? They get dirty and are very difficult to clean. Just wipe some mayo onto the keys, let it sit for 5 to 7 minutes then rub off with a clean cloth. The keys will be clean again. Stainless steel appliances are all the rage. The problem is that they attract fingerprints like magnets. No problem. Just wipe a little mayonnaise over the fingerprints and buff in the direction of the grain.
Have the kids begun an art project with crayons on your dining room wall? Apply some mayo. Let it stay on the affected area for a few minutes then wipe off the marks. What about those pesky price tags on glassware etc.? Saturate the tag with mayonnaise, let it sit for a few minutes then wipe it and the tag right off.
Mayo is better than peanut butter at removing gum from hair. Simply work the mayo into the gum while sliding the mess down the shaft of the hair. You can use mayo as a hair conditioner. Work it into your hair and rinse it out. Stick your hands into some mayo for about 15 minutes. This will revive cuticles and sooth any hangnails. It will save you money on manicures. Mayonnaise is also a great substitute for aloe to soothe sunburn. Do you have a ring stuck on your finger? Work a little mayo into your finger and the ring will slip right off.
Just be sure to save some for your next BLT!
