Help Out Your Cleaners by Organizing Your Home Office

If your home is cluttered when your cleaners arrive, cleaning personnel will have to spend more time tidying before they can start to clean and scrub. If you pay by the hour, this could even end up costing you more money. However, some areas can be very difficult to keep tidy. If your kitchen or home office is very small, without much storage space, clutter may seem to proliferate on every surface voluntarily.

Here are some tips on how to keep things more organized in your home office day-to-day so that you don't have to stress over tidying the place up before your cleaners arrive.

1. Use Wall Space

Arranging papers on a wall surface not only reduces the amount of dust they can catch, but also keeps them off of any flat surfaces that may need to be dusted. Any papers that you're currently using, may need to refer to frequently, or haven't processed and filed yet can benefit from vertical organization.

Several methods can provide the vertical organization effect. For instance, you can use a hanging mail tray, a cork bulletin board, a wall calendar, or a combination of these. You can even create a sort of command center on your wall. If wall space is limited, consider using the back of the door.

2. Reduce Clutter Preemptively

If organizing clutter doesn't come naturally to you, take steps to keep it from arriving in your office in the first place. For instance, if some of your paperwork is for accounts that have a paperless option, switch to paperless now to reduce the number of physical papers that you have to sort through later.

This strategy can make processing and filing papers less intimidating, and it can reduce the number of paper piles that you need to stash before cleaning crews arrive.

3. Try a Tiny Habit

Creating a tiny habit can help you keep your clutter under control and doesn't take a lot of time every day. In fact, a strategic small habit can streamline your actions by piggybacking on something you already do.

For example, you could look for one item to carry from your office to the kitchen sink, trash, laundry, or other area of the house each time you leave the room. When you make a trip to the kitchen to get more coffee, grab yesterday's coffee mug that's sitting on your desk, or bring your recycling to the kitchen to empty it into your main recycling bin.

Remembering to do this can be difficult at first while you work on developing the habit. Consider placing a sticky note on your doorknob or coffee mug to remind you to look around for something to grab before you leave the room. If you're consistent, your tiny habit can eventually become second nature.

4. Make the Most of Desk Storage

The first step to using your desk's storage potential is storing things optimally in your desk drawers. If you have any cluttered or even empty desk drawers, now is the time to get them organized. Decide which drawers will be used for which purposes, label them clearly, and look for any drawer organization products you need to make the most of drawer space.

Depending on the size and style of your desk, you may be able to fit additional storage under it or even on top of the desk itself. Mesh organizers, monitor stand risers with drawers, and other organizational products can help you keep your frequently-used items off the desk's surface, yet still within reach.

As you can see, changing how you organize things in your home office can improve the tidiness factor. You can be ready for your cleaning company to arrive on a moment's notice, and you won't have to worry about clearing off your desk and other surfaces to allow efficient cleaning.
