It’s Vacation Time in the Old Dominion
Vacation destinations are plentiful in the Old Dominion. Virginia is chock full of history and beautiful scenery. I love living in Virginia. Where I live, Virginia Beach, we get all four seasons but the only one that is brutal is summer. Summer is still officially five days away but the heat is setting in and the humidity will soon follow. The state is small enough that a four or five hour drive from where I am in the south eastern corner will cover the whole state.
Recently I was lucky enough to travel to downtown Charlottesville for the first time. The area has been transformed into a pedestrian mall with shops, outdoor dining, antiques etc. It’s a perfect destination for a short vacation. The University of Virginia has one of the loveliest campuses in the state. Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello, is worth a whole day. The man’s vision was amazing.
A Western Virginia Vacation
If you like natural wonders for your vacation, try Natural Bridge which is literally breathtaking. Cool off in the dark recesses of Luray Caverns or drive along the peaks of the Shenandoah during the fall. It’s called Skyline Drive and is worth the travel. Roanoke is in a beautiful area and, of course, in Blacksburg, Virginia Tech’s campus is not to be missed. Go Hokies!
Northern Virginia Offers a Totally Different Experience
Since Northern Virginia contains the suburbs of Washington, DC it houses the Pentagon, Arlington National Cemetery, and my personal favorite the Iwo Jima Memorial. On your vacation you can stay in Northern Virginia and take the Metro into DC where almost all of the fabulous museums and government agencies offer free tours.
On the way back to Virginia Beach I always stop in Colonial Williamsburg, a reproduction of the Commonwealth’s first capitol.
Of course, many might say that the best vacation spot in the state is right here at home: Virginia Beach!
