The first reason is obvious: It’s not quite as hot as it is in the dog days of July and August. As a matter of fact, the weather is forecast for sunny skies with temperatures in the low 70s. Speaking of dogs, you are now allowed to bring your leashed dog back to the beach. Three: fewer people are on the beach. You will find plenty of room to spread out your blanket. Four: the water is at its warmest of the season. Five: lifeguards are still on duty so you will be safe.
The absolute highlight of the Neptune Festival is the international Sand Castle Competition. This runs just along the boardwalk under a HUGE tent to protect the creations from the elements from 4th through 10th street. 22 teams or individuals will dazzle you with their mind boggling sand sculptures. There is a $5 admission charge for anyone over the age of 12. You will be able to view the sandcastles for the entire week after the festival, though they look better in the beginning of the week.
While that is going on, there will be a regatta from Cape Henry to Rudee Inlet and an arts and crafts show along the boardwalk from 16th to 32nd.
And if that isn’t enough to make your head spin, there is a parade on Atlantic Avenue on Saturday. The parade runs from 11:00 to 1:00. You can view fireworks Saturday night at 9:00 anywhere along the boardwalk. And there’s more…festival food everywhere you look and live music all day long Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the stages at 17th, 24th and 31st Streets. So bring your lawn chairs and plant them in front of one of these stages and enjoy the fact that the tourists are gone!!!
