The winter of 2016-2017 was one of the mildest in recorded history here in coastal Virginia. We had one snow storm that caused schools to be closed for three days. Other than that our days come in cold in the morning and moderate to the 40s or 50s toward afternoon. I always have my eye out for the first sighting of a daffodil in bloom because that, for me, signals the longed for beginning of Spring. In the past 39 years that I have lived here, the earliest sighting was February 12th.
Spring more normally arrives here the end of February after a mild winter with little or no measureable snow. This year my very first daffodil came into full bloom on February 11th, thus setting a new record. By mid February it seems like Spring will arrive any day now. Now I search for my favorite flowering trees. You know the ones I mean. They burst into gorgeous clouds of small pink flowers but only last a week or so. Spring continues with lovely Bradford pear trees. Many of our local streets are lined with them and once the blooms fall off, they show us the first green leaves of the season.
I know that further north, snow is once again predicted for early next week, but driving around Virginia Beach today I it appears that gorgeous Bradford pear trees will be in full bloom shortly as well as forsythias and pink cherry trees. It was 70 degrees, the sun was shining and the air has a sweet scent. I cut two vases full of all manner of daffodils and my house smells great too. Ah choo! Now to deal with the allergies that go hand in hand with Spring. Soon everything outside will be coated in lovely yellow pollen.
