Drawbacks: Sand, Sand, Sand!

We all enjoy living in a beach city. But along with the good comes sand.  Even if you don’t live right on the oceanfront, sand seems to follow you home every day. You track it in on your shoes just from walking up your driveway.  The kids track sand in from a day at Mount Trashmore.  A day spent enjoying the local beaches, means another day spent sweeping up the sand.  Here are a few ideas that can alleviate the problem.

 At the Beach

Rather than large towels which suck up the sand especially when they get wet, use mesh beach chairs.  They are more comfortable and allow the sand to drop through the mesh.  Take advantage of the faucets and showers found all along the boardwalk.  Wear flip flops rather than shoes.  Flip flops allow the sand to escape.   Use a mesh beach bag rather than canvas.  This way the sand won’t stick as it does with solid fabrics. Remember that a day spent enjoying the sunshine means that you need to apply sun block with an SPF of at least 30 and do so often.

Back at Home

Keep a hose near your entry door if you use the beach often.  Then you can rinse off the sand before it gets indoors.   Take flip flops off outside.  Bang them together before bringing them indoors.  Have a bristly door mat.

If sand gets inside your home, be sure to vacuum it up quickly.  If left on hard surface floors, especially hardwood, sand will scratch the finish.  A good canister vac will be easiest to remove the unwanted sand.

The Good Far Outweighs the Bad!

Let’s face it, nothing is as fabulous as a day at the beach!  And once you get back home, nothing feels as good as a nice warm shower.

Why and how to clean my washing machine Did you know that your washing machine can collect dirt and harbor bacteria and fungus? There is a thin film created by soap residue, minerals and chemicals from detergent. This can cause a clog in the inner workings of your machine, your water won't be as hot and the film also traps odors. The tiny crevices in the drum and gaskets can collect mildew and bacteria from your clothes. They can also harbor fungus. If you have a top loader here are some steps to follow when cleaning : Wipe interior seals around the door with all purpose cleaner Remove debris around filter or drain Use 1 cup of white vinegar with 1/2 cup baking soda then run a cycle on heat If you have a front loader here are some tips to follow when cleaning: Have a small bowl or towel ready to catch any excess water Remove the filter from the small door on the front panel of the machine Shake over trash can and rinse out. Use 1/2 cup baking soda and 3 cups white vinegar to scrub inside the drum and rubber gaskets You can use washing machine cleaner which can be purchased on line if you prefer Remove the fluids dispenser to clean each tray with disinfecting wipes Wipe out the area inside where the dispenser is located with the wipes If you have a "clean cycle" run the cycle, otherwise run the largest load setting on hot We hope this has been a quick and helpful guide for cleaning your washing machine . Remember, your washer should always smell fresh not like mildew.
