Norfolk Harbor Fest Ushers in Summer
In Norfolk, you know Summer is here when Harbor Fest begins with a majestic parade of sail. The signs have already been posted in the waterfront area telling motorists that roads like Waterside Drive will be closed for the weekend. The free event runs from noon to 11:00 PM on Friday and Saturday and from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM Sunday. The parade of sail will burst into Norfolk on the Elizabeth River beginning at noon on Friday, June 9th. Both Town Point Park and the river will become venues for a huge number of events. The weather forecasters have predicted sunny weather with temperatures in the 80s all weekend. Dress for hot weather and be sure to bring plenty of sun screen and water.
As with any good festival, food will be in abundance. Norfolk Harbor Fest is the largest and longest running such event in the nation. Food vendors of all types will spread out along the venue. You will find a craft beer area as well as a hot dog eating contest. The winner of the contest will qualify to move on to represent Norfolk in the world famous Nathan’s Fourth of July hot dog eating contest at Coney Island.
Fireworks Will Light Up the Norfolk Sky on Saturday
At 9:30 Saturday night, festival goers will enjoy one of the largest fireworks displays on the East coast. Three stages (main stage, waterside stage and boathouse stage) will showcase concerts throughout the event.
Norfolk is famous for our ubiquitous mermaids displayed throughout town. You will be able to take a photo with a real live mermaid. The kids will love Pirate School where they will learn all the secrets of being a good pirate.
Buskers (street musicians) will be performing throughout the event during the second annual Busker Fest. For those of you who need a short break, there will be an area designated as Cabana Land and Hammock Hangout. These areas will provide a place in the shade of a tent to sit and relax and cool yourself off.
On the river, you can see a build-your-own-boat event. The boats will be built on Saturday by a variety of crews. Then on Sunday they will try to sail their boats. Tug boats will participate in a Tug Muster to demonstrate their power in a rousing competition for bragging rights.
For Those Who Dislike Crowds
Good news. Fest Events will be live streaming the entire event. Sit back on your Lazy Boy. Heat up the popcorn and watch the weekend’s festivities in the air conditioned comfort of your home!
