In my grandmother’s day she mopped her kitchen floor almost every day. Back then there were really only two choices: a string mop or hands and knees. Let’s face it, string mops can be disgusting. You must launder them after each use. This makes them wear out sooner. They become dirty and smelly and generally awful. Hand mopping did a much better job, but was labor intensive, not to mention hard on the knees and back. It always seemed like either method made the floor (which was probably linoleum in those days) pretty wet. Mom always told me not to walk in the kitchen when the mopping had just been done.
Using a mop like the one above that is flat and has a removable, washable microfiber cloth cover makes mopping today much easier. These flat mops can be purchased at any big box store or grocery store. First vacuum the entire floor to pick up any loose debris. (Here in Chesapeake, we have the added issue of sand). Vacuuming first will keep you from making mud pies on your floor.
Dampen the microfiber and use a spray bottle to deliver the cleanser to the floor. Spray a small section then mop over it. You can rinse the microfiber repeatedly to keep from just redistributing dirt. Start in the corner farthest away from the door and mop your way out. Pay special attention to all edges and corners. Keep the mop only damp, not wet. It is the chemical that will do the work, not the water. Use any over the counter neutral (pH 7) cleanser like Mr. Clean or Formula 409.
Rinse the floor with a clean microfiber cover and you will be a happy camper. You can rest assured that your toddlers and older kids who like to play on the floor will be in a safe healthy environment.
