May in Virginia Beach is awesome! The weather fluctuates between Spring and Summer. Temperatures vary from the 60s to the high 80s with little to no humidity. There is one other thing largely missing from Virginia Beach in May: tourists. Sure, some people from outside the area venture to the coast in May, but you will find plenty of room on the beach for your blanket, umbrella and sand toys. Only the bravest will want to venture into the ocean since it doesn’t warm up sufficiently until well into June.
Check out the Pan Fest at the 24th Street Park for both concerts and a steel drum competition. Friday and Saturday nights you will be entertained by steel bands from high schools, colleges and community groups from all over the East Coast. Saturday you will see competitions all day to determine which band will win the Grand Champion trophy.
On May 19 through 21st you will enjoy the Beach Music Cruise-In. Car enthusiasts will be showing their classic muscle cars, hot rods, vintage cars on the Virginia Beach Boardwalk at 30th Street. Bands playing beach music will entertain crowds on the beach in the same area.
Do your kids love pirates? Then the Pirate Party on the Beach will thrill them on May 20th and 21st. The park at 17th Street will be home base for pirate re-enactors, face painters and lots of pirate based activities. Of course, all these festivities will be accompanied by music from the band shell.
Salute to Summer is chock full of events. You will find concerts on the stages at 17th, 24th and 31st streets. The Boardwalk from 16th through 32nd Streets will be transformed into The Heroes Walk. High school students from Virginia Beach have written essays describing historical US military conflicts. The essays, reprinted on 4 foot by 8 foot banners, will hang all along the area. This entire weekend salutes the men and women of our armed services.
