October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Breast cancer is a disease that can be defeated when caught early and treated aggressively. One of the most important pieces in breast cancer treatment is detection and the regular mammogram is the beginning of that journey. A mammogram can detect abnormalities in the breast. Of course, a monthly self exam is the first step in the process. Doctors’ opinions vary on how often a woman should undergo breast screening, but the general rule of thumb is to begin at age 40 unless you have other risk factors such as a family history of the disease and then annually. A mammogram can detect cancer in the breast even before a lump can be felt. There are new 3D films that show even more detail.
Some Women Are Afraid of a Mammogram
A mammogram is a painless procedure. There can be a little discomfort involved for some women, but it is minimal. You have absolutely no reason to fear the procedure or its outcome. A technician spreads the breast onto a flat x-ray platform. Then she lowers another plate until the breast is compressed as flat as possible. This takes only a few seconds which can be uncomfortable. The American Cancer Society ( http://www.cancer.org/cancer/breastcancer) has a site that answers many of your questions.
Most insurances offer free or reduced cost wellness screening each year.
