Roof  and Gutter Maintenance

Mold and mildew are sometimes an issue on our roofs. It is humid here in Virginia Beach   That means  routine annual maintenance is important to keep the roof in tip top shape.   You can hire someone to do the job for you if you are leery of heights, ladders and such.  A few hardy do-it-yourselfers will climb that ladder and clean the roof themselves.  Talk to the experts at your local hardware store. They can give you an idea of the right kind of solution to use to kill the mildew.

The gutters should be cleaned out  twice a year.  The best way to tackle the job is to use work gloves.  Remove the built up leaves and gunk by hand.  Save what you remove to add to your compost pile.  After the heavy debris is gone, use a hose to rinse out what remains.  If there is a clog in the downspout, you may have to use a plumber’s auger to loosen it.  Then the water will run freely.  Remember, any time you are on the roof, to be aware of power cables.  Also do not stand on the roof.  The shingles can be very slippery when wet.

Maintaining Vinyl Siding

Dirt and grime collect on vinyl siding, so you should clean it at least once a year.  If the dirt is not too heavy, then spraying the siding down with a garden hose with a spray attachment should do the job.   If there is a build up or you have mildew on the siding, check with your local paint store for an appropriate cleaner.  This can be applied using an attachment to the hose, or perhaps a soft bristle brush.  If the soil is very heavy, you may want to rent a pressure washer.  Remember to set the pressure low so as not to damage the siding.

Once your roof and siding are all clean, it will make your yard look better.  It will increase curb appeal and make your home the envy of the neighborhood.  I’m sure you will be exhausted after such physical activity.  If you don’t have any energy left for indoor housecleaning, call Custom Maid at 499-8568 and we will be glad to lend a hand!

Why and how to clean my washing machine Did you know that your washing machine can collect dirt and harbor bacteria and fungus? There is a thin film created by soap residue, minerals and chemicals from detergent. This can cause a clog in the inner workings of your machine, your water won't be as hot and the film also traps odors. The tiny crevices in the drum and gaskets can collect mildew and bacteria from your clothes. They can also harbor fungus. If you have a top loader here are some steps to follow when cleaning : Wipe interior seals around the door with all purpose cleaner Remove debris around filter or drain Use 1 cup of white vinegar with 1/2 cup baking soda then run a cycle on heat If you have a front loader here are some tips to follow when cleaning: Have a small bowl or towel ready to catch any excess water Remove the filter from the small door on the front panel of the machine Shake over trash can and rinse out. Use 1/2 cup baking soda and 3 cups white vinegar to scrub inside the drum and rubber gaskets You can use washing machine cleaner which can be purchased on line if you prefer Remove the fluids dispenser to clean each tray with disinfecting wipes Wipe out the area inside where the dispenser is located with the wipes If you have a "clean cycle" run the cycle, otherwise run the largest load setting on hot We hope this has been a quick and helpful guide for cleaning your washing machine . Remember, your washer should always smell fresh not like mildew.
