Winter has finally made itself known here in Tidewater. We are looking ahead to at least a couple of months of cold weather and maybe even some more snow. The best way to bundle up and keep warm in temperatures near freezing is to don a parka. But not just any parka. The fabric should be wind resistant. You should look for a heavy weight nylon. That will not only keep the cold out, but also will keep the warmth in. You will want tight cuffs so the wind cannot blow up the sleeves. The cuffs can either be knitted and ribbed or perhaps they may have a hook and loop closure that will tighten the sleeve after the coat is on.
You will definitely want a hood on your parka. Some hoods are removable for when the weather is not at the freezing level. But you lose most of your body heat through your head so you definitely want to keep it covered. The hood should have a draw string so you can pull it tight around your face. You will still want to wear a scarf around your neck. If the hood is lined with Sherpa or faux fur, that is better yet.
A truly great parka will have not only a zipper, but also snaps. If you could see a person in a parka on a cold day with infrared technology, you would be able to see that body warmth escapes through a zipper alone. So look for a flap that closes over the zipper and has snaps to be secure.
Finish off the cold weather outfit with a great pair of gloves or mittens and you will stay warm on a very cold day. I have heard it said that mittens keep hands warmer because the fingers touch to conserve warmth.
