Indoor Air Quality is Worse in the Winter
It is the blah time of winter. We have all had either frigid below zero temperatures, or repeated feet of snow, or for those of us who are really unlucky, both! Cabin fever is setting in and our indoor air quality is probably at its worst level of the year. We cannot open windows to air out our homes. We cannot run the air conditioners. So we run the heat and keep recycling the nasty air we have been living with since way before the holidays.
What Factors Figure in to Indoor Air Quality?
Indoor air quality is a conglomeration of many things. It is pet dander and tobacco smoke. Even if you only smoke outdoors or do not smoke at all, you pick up the scent throughout the day. Did you know that light colored cats trigger fewer allergens than darker colored cats? Another factor is aerosolized household cleaners. It is dust mites and dust and a hundred other things. Inefficient vacuum cleaners can exhaust dust back into the air and surfaces they are supposed to be cleaning. When you dust, use a microfiber cloth. It will pick up and remove dust, dander etc. rather than just moving it around.
What Can You Do to Improve Your Indoor Air Quality?
Be certain to change your furnace filters monthly. Otherwise, you will just be recirculating dusty air. On a clear day, open a couple of windows for a few minutes. Be sure your vacuum cleaner bag is not over full or it will exhaust dirt back into the room. Choose a vac with a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter. Be sure you are controlling mold or mildew in your bathrooms. You might also speak with your HVAC professional about an HRV (heat recovery ventilator) which exhaust stale air and recirculate fresh air. Many companies are equipped to clean your air ducts. A technician will use magnetized sheets to cover your air vents along the line. Then they use air to clean the ducts. Some air duct cleaners will actually use a small camera to show you before and after pictures. I believe this process is especially beneficial for households with pets and family members who suffer from allergies.
