Weather forecasters are predicting that during the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season, the United States will experience 13 named storms with 6 named hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes. The season for such storms runs from June 1 until December 1. When a storm develops, there is a certain amount of competition among the local meteorologists to whip the population into a frenzy. They do this particularly during periods of uncertainty before a hurricane or snow storm or nor’easter.
In Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Chesapeake, we have not had a major hurricane in several years. The period leading up to such a storm, residents stay glued to their TVs and digital devices for news. Are we within the cone of certainty? That could mean coastal flooding at the very least. And in some local areas even a heavy rain will cause flooding in some neighborhoods. In a strong storm, there might be property damage, uprooted trees or even deaths. Many in this area choose to head inland to ride out a storm. In the case of intense winds and storm surge, we could have coastal flooding and may even be directed to evacuate the coastal area.
Homes very close to the coast of either the ocean or the bay may need to make some more significant arrangements such as boarding up windows. Before a hurricane, everyone should be sure that any loose items in the yard such as grills, chairs and umbrellas are either tied down or brought indoors. Also, if you do have pets, keep pet carriers on hand just in case you evacuate.
You might want to invest in a generator just in case a hurricane causes the power to go out. Also be sure to keep your gutters clear of leaves, twigs and branches. If you have trees in your yard, talk to a tree service and have them remove any dead branches and just keep the trees trimmed.
If you follow these easy ideas, then you should be able to weather the storm just fine.
