Today is Our 31st Anniversary

Looking back, it seems hard to believe that exactly 31 years ago today, I was cleaning my very first home.  I was terrified!  Cleaning my own home was one thing.  I always kept a relatively clean home, but to clean for someone else seemed scary.  What if I wasn’t good enough?  I didn’t know anything about the science of cleaning.  As they say now, I didn’t know what I didn’t know.  But “Bunny” was pleased with my work and hired Custom Maid on a regular basis.  Wow!  One client!  I still remember everything about that home from the blue shower to the green sofa.  I never could have predicted then that I would still be at it 31 years later.

What Does Our Anniversary Mean?

I look back, on this anniversary, and think about the hundreds, probably thousands of women who have worked at Custom Maid over the years.  Many of them have been single mothers.  Some have been grandmothers.  All of them have been hard workers and team players.  Many of the women who have worked with us became life long friends.  On this anniversary I wonder what became of some of them.  My first employee, Janet; my power team for over ten years, Mary Beth and Cindy.  I’m Face Book friends with Carol and Anita and Andi and Mimi.

I’m proud that Custom Maid has pumped hundreds of thousands of dollars back into the local economy in Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Chesapeake.  I’m also very proud that we participate with Cleaning for a Reason and that means we clean for free for women who are undergoing treatment for cancer.  I am proud that we now know the science behind cleaning and understand the best way to care for our clients’ homes.  This is National Small Business Week and Custom Maid is proud to be a (very) small part of that important movement.

A Big Thank You

Thanks to all of our clients, past and present .  You have made us what we are.  We appreciate your continued loyalty.

We are looking forward to the next 31 years!

Why and how to clean my washing machine Did you know that your washing machine can collect dirt and harbor bacteria and fungus? There is a thin film created by soap residue, minerals and chemicals from detergent. This can cause a clog in the inner workings of your machine, your water won't be as hot and the film also traps odors. The tiny crevices in the drum and gaskets can collect mildew and bacteria from your clothes. They can also harbor fungus. If you have a top loader here are some steps to follow when cleaning : Wipe interior seals around the door with all purpose cleaner Remove debris around filter or drain Use 1 cup of white vinegar with 1/2 cup baking soda then run a cycle on heat If you have a front loader here are some tips to follow when cleaning: Have a small bowl or towel ready to catch any excess water Remove the filter from the small door on the front panel of the machine Shake over trash can and rinse out. Use 1/2 cup baking soda and 3 cups white vinegar to scrub inside the drum and rubber gaskets You can use washing machine cleaner which can be purchased on line if you prefer Remove the fluids dispenser to clean each tray with disinfecting wipes Wipe out the area inside where the dispenser is located with the wipes If you have a "clean cycle" run the cycle, otherwise run the largest load setting on hot We hope this has been a quick and helpful guide for cleaning your washing machine . Remember, your washer should always smell fresh not like mildew.
