What You Must Know About Caring for Your Dryer

Everyone knows that before transferring a new load of damp laundry from the washer to the dryer, you must pull out the vent screen and remove any accumulated lint.  But do you know the reasons why you must do this?  I have always thought that the reason was to allow the dryer to work more efficiently with more air flow.  While that statement is certainly true, many people forget this easy task and allow the lint to build up in the filter.  Not only does this block air flow, but it becomes a serious fire risk.  You must remove the lint every single time you run your dryer.

Removing Lint is Not the Only Necessary Task

Many people are in the habit of using dryer sheets to keep static out of their laundry.  The way that dryer sheets work is to impart a light, invisible coating to the fabric of your clothing.  The sheets also leave an invisible residue on the lint filter.  You may run your hand over the filter to remove the heaviest build up of lint.  However, you will still have tiny pieces of lint left behind.  You may look through the holes of the lint screen and think they are clear.  But the dryer sheets have coated the screen so that it cannot do its job properly.

Your Dryer Requires Annual Maintenance As Well

Another potential fire hazard lurks in the hose that runs from the back of your dryer to the outdoors.  The hose bunches up over time.  This traps chunks of lint inside the hose.  I hire a company once a year to clean the entire ventilation system of my dryer.  They clean the inside of the hose over its entire length.  I used to have my laundry appliances on the second floor of my home.  The hose wound around behind the dryer, disappeared into the wall and up through the attic to a roof vent.  There was no way I could accomplish a thorough cleaning myself.  Keep an eye out for coupons that come to your mailbox regularly.  There are always several companies that offer dryer vent cleaning.

Keeping lint and residue out of your dryer vent will keep your home safe and will allow your dryer to do a more efficient job.  Now sit back and relax and consider hiring Custom Maid to take care of the routine cleaning of your home on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule.  Call us at 499-8568 for more information.

Why and how to clean my washing machine Did you know that your washing machine can collect dirt and harbor bacteria and fungus? There is a thin film created by soap residue, minerals and chemicals from detergent. This can cause a clog in the inner workings of your machine, your water won't be as hot and the film also traps odors. The tiny crevices in the drum and gaskets can collect mildew and bacteria from your clothes. They can also harbor fungus. If you have a top loader here are some steps to follow when cleaning : Wipe interior seals around the door with all purpose cleaner Remove debris around filter or drain Use 1 cup of white vinegar with 1/2 cup baking soda then run a cycle on heat If you have a front loader here are some tips to follow when cleaning: Have a small bowl or towel ready to catch any excess water Remove the filter from the small door on the front panel of the machine Shake over trash can and rinse out. Use 1/2 cup baking soda and 3 cups white vinegar to scrub inside the drum and rubber gaskets You can use washing machine cleaner which can be purchased on line if you prefer Remove the fluids dispenser to clean each tray with disinfecting wipes Wipe out the area inside where the dispenser is located with the wipes If you have a "clean cycle" run the cycle, otherwise run the largest load setting on hot We hope this has been a quick and helpful guide for cleaning your washing machine . Remember, your washer should always smell fresh not like mildew.
