Complaints Can Be Awkward to Make
Do you get an uneasy feeling in the pit of your stomach when you find it necessary to make a complaint? Maybe you have an internal conversation with yourself. Is the problem really that bad? Maybe you can rectify it yourself. Maybe you misunderstood the parameters of the job. But upon further thought, you decide you do need to register a complaint with the management. You hope the person you talk to will not be defensive.
How is that complaint dealt with on the other end? Is the person you are complaining to attentive? Is she (or he) sympathetic? Most importantly, do they offer a solution to the problem? There is a famous story in the folklore of the department store, Nordstrom’s. The flagship store in Seattle was built on the site of a previous auto supply store. One day a man came in with a faulty tire and asked for a refund. Obviously the tire had not been purchased at Nordstrom’s, but Mr. Nordstrom stood by the fact that the tire had been purchased in his building so he made the refund to the customer. That is a little over the top in this day and age, but you have the right to file a complaint and expect that it be handled professionally and congenially.
