Custom Maid Was Founded on May 6, 1985

Tuesday May 6, 1985 was the day I cleaned a client’s home for the first time.  To say I was nervous and a little out of my league is an understatement.  It took me a whole day to clean a 2000 square foot house with only two bathrooms.  I got home that night with $30 in my pocket wondering what I had gotten myself into.  I still have the $30 in a frame on my desk.  I started to rethink my idea.  To work a whole day, come home sore and dog tired and only earn $30 made me think I should go back to the drawing board.

As with any job I got better and faster.  After a short while I could clean 2 houses a day.  After three months I hired my first employee, Janet from Tennessee who really knew how to clean and taught me everything I didn’t already know.

Custom Maid Has Always Had a Stellar Staff

Over the years, Custom Maid has cleaned well over a quarter of a million homes.  I don’t really mean Custom Maid, but rather, of course, the amazing group of women who have cleaned for Custom Maid during the past 30 years.  A few who stand out to me and whom you may remember are Barbara, Mary Beth, Cindy, Ingrid, Carol and many more.  At one time we had 3 Susans working in the office.  Speaking of the Custom Maid office, the three women who run the show there now that I am retired are Susan Helms who is the General Manager and deals with all of the craziness of cleaning almost 40 homes on any given day.  She has been with Custom Maid for 17 years.  Susan Diggs with 16 years and Janet Carpenter who is the rookie of the bunch with a mere 13 years round out the people you speak with on the phone.

The cleaning staff has a combined total of 131 years of cleaning experience with Custom Maid.  That means that our staff averages 5 and a half years with us.  Our longest time employee is the always dependable Sharon with 16 years.  Andi, one of our trainers has grown up with Custom Maid for the last 15 years.  She is always willing to pitch in wherever needed.  Jessica who has been with Custom Maid for 12 years is a really hard worker and always has a smile.

Without the people I’ve mentioned and all of the others that there is just not room to single out, Custom Maid would not have had the success we have had.  As I celebrate the 30th anniversary of my “baby”, I know it’s really my staff who should be celebrated.

Thank you to all of the present staff and to all those who have come and gone in the past 30 years!

Why and how to clean my washing machine Did you know that your washing machine can collect dirt and harbor bacteria and fungus? There is a thin film created by soap residue, minerals and chemicals from detergent. This can cause a clog in the inner workings of your machine, your water won't be as hot and the film also traps odors. The tiny crevices in the drum and gaskets can collect mildew and bacteria from your clothes. They can also harbor fungus. If you have a top loader here are some steps to follow when cleaning : Wipe interior seals around the door with all purpose cleaner Remove debris around filter or drain Use 1 cup of white vinegar with 1/2 cup baking soda then run a cycle on heat If you have a front loader here are some tips to follow when cleaning: Have a small bowl or towel ready to catch any excess water Remove the filter from the small door on the front panel of the machine Shake over trash can and rinse out. Use 1/2 cup baking soda and 3 cups white vinegar to scrub inside the drum and rubber gaskets You can use washing machine cleaner which can be purchased on line if you prefer Remove the fluids dispenser to clean each tray with disinfecting wipes Wipe out the area inside where the dispenser is located with the wipes If you have a "clean cycle" run the cycle, otherwise run the largest load setting on hot We hope this has been a quick and helpful guide for cleaning your washing machine . Remember, your washer should always smell fresh not like mildew.
