I started this article with a picture of a couple of sponges. The reason for that is you can look up how to keep sponges clean on the internet and find recipes that use bleach or baking soda and involve soaking etc. I have found that sponges get nasty really quickly and the very best way to clean and sanitize them is to put them in your dishwasher every evening with your dishes. One caveat about sponges is that many of them come with an abrasive layer. Be very careful when cleaning with this layer as it will scratch many surfaces like stainless steel, or ceramic stove tops. If you are going to use sponges for cleaning, just get plain old sponges without the abrasive layer.
Often the dirtiest place in your oven is the racks. Even if you have a self cleaning oven, the instructions will tell you to remove the racks before running the cleaning cycle. Here’s a tip that I learned many years ago and it has held up over the years. Put the racks in a double heavy duty plastic bag. Spray lots of oven cleaner into the bag. Do this step outside in case of dripping. Then just let the bag sit on a sidewalk or driveway for a few hours in the sun. (If you set the bag on the grass and the oven cleaner leaks, it will kill your grass.) When you take the racks out you can just hose them off and they will look like new. No scrubbing, no putting them in the tub with some homemade concoction.
Want to clean the inside of your dishwasher? Use a cup of Tang (yes the Tang that the Astronauts drink) and run the cleaning cycle. Does your disposal smell? Run a handful of ice cubes through then follow with some lemon slices. This will also keep the blades sharp. Store your extra trash can liners in the bottom of the trash can under the liner. They will always be at your fingertips.
