Sometimes Slow and Steady Wins the Race
When you finally decide it is time to do the regular cleaning chores, your feeling about the project is most likely to get it over with as quickly as possible. You want to rush through the process so you can get to the things you really want to spend time doing. There are, however, several regular house cleaning chores that benefit from being slow. One of these is disinfecting. When you read the label instructions, they will talk about dwell time. This means that you should not merely wipe the counter with the product. It means you need to slow down. Spray or wipe the area with the disinfectant then stop. Wait ten minutes so the product can do its job. Then rinse the area. Going slow, in this case, really does win the race.
Spot Cleaning Carpets and Removing Soap Scum
This job requires patience. When you are trying to remove some spill, for instance, use an over the counter spot remover and follow the label directions. Be patient, work in a slow and methodical way. First, use a white cloth. The reason for a white cloth is to prevent colored cloths from bleeding their color into the carpet. Then blot (do not rub) the spill until no more dampness remains. Then apply the spot remover, let it sit for a few minutes, and blot it out.
When you are trying to remove a build up of soap scum from a shower or tub, you only want to do that job once. So apply whatever product you like using. Scrubbing Bubbles or Barkeepers’ Friend are both good choices. To totally remove the soap scum you need two things: first a good product and second agitation. That means good old fashioned elbow grease. Spray the chemical from the bottom and move upwards with the spray. By the way this is the only time in house cleaning when you start with the bottom rather than the top. Doing it this way, it gives the chemical more time on the dirtiest part of the area. Then scrub until you can no longer feel the grittiness of the soap scum. Then, and only then should you rinse. To scrub and rinse only to find that the soap sum remains is a waste of time. Scrub once and rinse once. Another time when slow is the best method.
