Since 1982, the city of Chesapeake has hosted their annual Jubilee. Established in 1982 as a 20th birthday party for the city, it began at Greenbrier Mall as a small celebration and has expanded over the subsequent years to the extravaganza that it is today. The Chesapeake Jubilee this year begins on Thursday, May 19 at 4:30 with the Kiwanis Club of Chesapeake Shrimp Feast. The price is $30 on line or $40 at the door. The Jubilee closes Sunday evening.
The Chesapeake Jubilee ( http://chesapeakejubilee.org/ ) kicks off in earnest on Friday afternoon. There will be two stages set up for music acts throughout the weekend. Some of the musical highlights include Lewis McGehee plus Black and White Blues on Friday. A Toby Keith cover act and “Reggae Ambassadors” Third World appear on Saturday and Sunday closes out with Chloe Carpenter and Lonestar (a multi-platinum country quartet). All of the musical performances are free with your $3 daily admission.
No proper festival would be complete without a carnival so Amusements of America will be bringing the largest traveling amusement park to Chesapeake City Park. There will be all manner of rides and you will be able to get a wristband that will entitle the wearer to all rides all day. Prices range from $20 to $30 depending upon day and time. Parking ranges from $5 to $10 dollars per day.
Other activities include lots of things to keep the kiddies occupied. There will be face painting, juggling and much more in the kids corner. There will be plenty of food from funnel cakes to turkey drumsticks and everything in between. There will even be the 9th annual Barbecue Cook-off which is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society and prizes totaling over $10 thousand will be awarded. The Chesapeake Four H Club will be hosting a livestock show and sale.
And, of course, there will be fireworks Saturday night presented by Zambelli Fireworks.
