Carpeted surfaces should be thoroughly vacuumed at least once a week. If you have toddlers and/or pets, then play areas and traffics areas will probably need attention two or three times per week. Most of the debris on carpeted floors is pet hair, dander and dirt that is tracked in from outside. The dirt will, if not frequently vacuumed, act like tiny little saws that will bite into the base of your carpet fibers and shorten the life of your carpet.
Have stains, traffic areas and carpets that get heavy use, professionally cleaned once every six months to a year. There is a science to cleaning carpeted floors. If you choose an over the counter remedy for stains and pick the wrong one, you run the risk of setting the stain. I prefer to call a professional carpet cleaner to do the job. I look for one that is certified by the IICRC (the Institute for Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification). IICRC is a non-profit certifying organization. Using a certified firm will assure you that your technician has gone through the proper training and will know how to handle any stains you might have on your carpeted floors.
All hard surfaces should be thoroughly vacuumed to remove loose debris before any mopping is done. Vinyl, linoleum or ceramic tile floors will need to be damp mopped. Start in the farthest corner from the door and work your way out. Starting in the corners assures that there is no dirty build up in the corners and on the edges. Rinse your mop head often and thoroughly.
When vacuuming wood floors, use a soft bristle attachment on your vacuum. Otherwise dirt and debris caught under a hard roller could scratch the surface. While it is necessary to damp mop wood floors, the mop should be barely damp. Laminate floors float on a cushion of air and an overly wet mopping could cause water to get underneath the boards and cause buckling. Hardwood floors can be damp mopped, again with a barely damp mop, using a neutral pH cleaner.
While you are looking for an IICRC certified carpet cleaning company, you might also want to know that Custom Maid is an IICRC certified house cleaning company.
