As a homeowner, have you ever asked yourself… What exactly should be cleaned in my bathroom… and when?

Since we have been cleaning homes for over 33 years, we have often been asked about the quickest and most effective to clean certain areas of a home.

So…

We have created a helpful checklist: What you should clean in your bathroom and when, to guide you through this process. It’s much easier to wipe something down here and there then to let it all build up!

What You Should Clean In Your Bathroom Every Day

☑PICK UP DIRTY CLOTHES / TOWELS
Put dirty clothes in a hamper … if you have teenagers you know accomplishing this is a feat in itself!  Hang towels for reuse….save our natural resources!
☑SINK(S) AND VANITY TOPS
Spot clean with a damp cloth any drips or spills…to save even more time, you should try to multitask while brushing your teeth, etc.

Cleaning Tip

TIP…  The bathroom faucet should be wiped down and sanitized as often as possible to stop the spread of germs.

…Especially If You Have Small Children!  Just give it a quick spray and wipe down.

☑SPOT CLEAN MIRROR

Boy… Those Electric Toothbrushes Really Spray It Around…  Let Alone The Flossing!   Again, just a spray of glass cleaner and a quick wipe down wherever necessary.

What You Should Clean In Your Bathroom Every Week

☑FRESH TOWELS
Replace old towels with fresh ones….fold neatly over towel bar.
☑ENTIRE MIRROR
Start at the top and work your way down the mirror with glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth…be sure to pull all items away from mirror to avoid any overspray on your toothbrush, etc.
Cleaning Bathroom Mirror

This is the first thing you notice when you walk in….keep it clean ! Use a multi-purpose cleaner to thoroughly wipe down all surfaces. Have your lotions and sprays organized for the best look.

☑TUB / SHOWER

Spray with a bathroom/soap scum cleaner. Let it sit and do it’s work for a few minutes. Then use a scrub pad to wipe down and rinse with hot water

Cleaning Tip

TIP… If you have some stubborn stains or extra soap scum try using a Magic Eraser.  It can usually do the job.

Use a bleach based cleaner to scrub the inside of the toilet bowl and wipe down the outside as well. Don’t forget to get under the toilet seat and the base of the toilet!

For the best results….clean using a damp microfiber cloth on hands and knees with the proper cleaner for your flooring.  Also, this is the perfect time to clean the floor area behind the toilet, it’s always a hard reach and one of the most neglected areas in your bathroom!

What You Should Clean In Your Bathroom Every Month

☑CLEAN CEILING VENT

You will be amazed at the amount of dust that collects on the vent.  Use an extendable duster to wipe clean. (Be sure to do this before you clean the floor)

☑HAND WASH LIGHT FIXTURE(S)

Use a damp cloth to wipe light fixtures….but be sure the lights are off and cool to the touch.  Otherwise, you risk getting burned or having the bulb blow out!

Again….the amount of dust that builds up here is crazy.  Dust decor with microfiber cloth and be sure to clean glass on any framed artwork.

Cleaning Tip

TIP… If you have some items to dust that have intricate parts, consider using a clean dry paint brush to get inside the nooks and crannies.

☑CLEAN INSIDE WINDOWS / WINDOW SILLS AND THEIR TRACKS

Wipe with glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth.  Clean the windows first, next the window sills and then inside the tracks.

Cleaning Bathroom Shower

This is often overlooked area…but mold grows quickly if it’s not kept clean.  Using a bleach based cleaner and a thin scrub pad or even a toothbrush will do the trick!

What You Should Clean In Your Bathroom Twice a Year

Cleaning Bathroom Drawers and Cabinets
It’s always a good idea to purge any unwanted items at least twice a year…this includes any expired or old makeup. Also check the expiration date on any medication you have in your cabinet.
Now is a good time to take inventory of your linens and towels.  Discard any worn or ripped sheets and towels and replace them with new ones.

In conclusion...

It’s kind of like the old saying…”An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!”  If you keep up with cleaning and organizing a little as you go then you won’t be overwhelmed when you begin cleaning.  You may be pressed for time when getting ready to start your day but it only takes a few seconds to make sure things are tidy before leaving the bathroom.

Why and how to clean my washing machine Did you know that your washing machine can collect dirt and harbor bacteria and fungus? There is a thin film created by soap residue, minerals and chemicals from detergent. This can cause a clog in the inner workings of your machine, your water won't be as hot and the film also traps odors. The tiny crevices in the drum and gaskets can collect mildew and bacteria from your clothes. They can also harbor fungus. If you have a top loader here are some steps to follow when cleaning : Wipe interior seals around the door with all purpose cleaner Remove debris around filter or drain Use 1 cup of white vinegar with 1/2 cup baking soda then run a cycle on heat If you have a front loader here are some tips to follow when cleaning: Have a small bowl or towel ready to catch any excess water Remove the filter from the small door on the front panel of the machine Shake over trash can and rinse out. Use 1/2 cup baking soda and 3 cups white vinegar to scrub inside the drum and rubber gaskets You can use washing machine cleaner which can be purchased on line if you prefer Remove the fluids dispenser to clean each tray with disinfecting wipes Wipe out the area inside where the dispenser is located with the wipes If you have a "clean cycle" run the cycle, otherwise run the largest load setting on hot We hope this has been a quick and helpful guide for cleaning your washing machine . Remember, your washer should always smell fresh not like mildew.
