Coping With Cold Weather Indoors

Tidewater is in the midst of a cold wave unlike anything seen here in decades.  We are forecast to break low temperature records for the next few days.  How can you keep the cold at bay inside your home?  First and very important, in order to keep your pipes from freezing and bursting, set your faucets to a slow drip and open the cabinet doors under the sinks.  This should keep your plumbing safe.

If you have air leaks around your windows, a short term fix to keep the cold air from blowing inside is to use blue painter’s tape along the edges of the windows to seal out the wind.  Use a space heater but read all the instructions first.  You do not want the heater to start a fire.

Driving on Icy Roads

It goes without saying that cold temperatures will freeze water on roadways to a sheet of ice.  It’s probably best to stay off the roads, but if you need to go out, and find yourself in a skid, take your foot off the accelerator and steer in the direction of the skid.  You’ve probably heard that one before, but it can’t hurt to hear it again.  You never know when you will need to use the advice.  Go slowly on cold, icy roads.  Be on the lookout for black ice.  This looks like pavement, but is actually ice.  You will find it most often on bridges, overpasses and shady areas.  When braking, pump the brake to avoid skids.

Taking Care of Yourself in Cold Weather

Dress in layers.  Dress in natural fabrics like cotton and wool which are breathable and trap the warm air close to your body.  When it’s necessary to go outside, wear a heavy coat with a zipper that has a flap over it to keep the warm air from escaping.  Be sure to cover your head with either a hat or a hood (or both!).  When the air gets into the single digits, you need to cover as much of your skin as possible so wear gloves or mittens and don’t forget your face.  Use a scarf around your neck and over the lower part of your face.

The best way to keep warm is bundle up inside, put a fire in the fireplace and let the dog snuggle with you.  Now just wait out the cold.  Spring, they say, is right around the corner!

Why and how to clean my washing machine Did you know that your washing machine can collect dirt and harbor bacteria and fungus? There is a thin film created by soap residue, minerals and chemicals from detergent. This can cause a clog in the inner workings of your machine, your water won't be as hot and the film also traps odors. The tiny crevices in the drum and gaskets can collect mildew and bacteria from your clothes. They can also harbor fungus. If you have a top loader here are some steps to follow when cleaning : Wipe interior seals around the door with all purpose cleaner Remove debris around filter or drain Use 1 cup of white vinegar with 1/2 cup baking soda then run a cycle on heat If you have a front loader here are some tips to follow when cleaning: Have a small bowl or towel ready to catch any excess water Remove the filter from the small door on the front panel of the machine Shake over trash can and rinse out. Use 1/2 cup baking soda and 3 cups white vinegar to scrub inside the drum and rubber gaskets You can use washing machine cleaner which can be purchased on line if you prefer Remove the fluids dispenser to clean each tray with disinfecting wipes Wipe out the area inside where the dispenser is located with the wipes If you have a "clean cycle" run the cycle, otherwise run the largest load setting on hot We hope this has been a quick and helpful guide for cleaning your washing machine . Remember, your washer should always smell fresh not like mildew.
