Autumn is the ultimate time to prune most shrubs. Using a hand saw or hand clippers, remove all dead or diseased branches as well as any out of control areas. This goes for trees as well, though there are several caveats when trimming trees. You will probably need a long handled trimmer depending on the tree. Be very sure to stay at least 10 feet away from power lines and to use safety goggles. If the trees are really large, then perhaps hiring a professional tree service makes more sense. I have used Mike’s Tree Service and been very happy.
Potted plants should be brought indoors in autumn when the nights get down to about 50 degrees. Before bringing them inside, though, spray them down with a garden hose to remove any dirt or insects.
After the first Autumn frost, cut back perennials to a few inches and remove the plant debris as it attracts bugs.
Autumn is the time to plant bulbs like daffodils, tulips and hyacinths. Check the bulbs before planting them. They should be hard when you squeeze them. Soft bulbs should be discarded
as they may be rotting.
Dethatch your lawn if the thatch is more than a half inch thick. Then aerate the soil. This will allow for better root growth and better distribution of water. Use the autumn to repair bald spots in the lawn by using a mixture of grass seed, quick start fertilizer and mulch.
Mulch the shrubs and flowers beds with 2 to 3 inches of hardwood mulch. And remember one of the best mulches is, believe it or not, snow. It covers the ground and as it melts it waters the plants!
