Remove fallen leaves as soon as they fall. Allowing leaves to sit on the grass until they have all fallen might seem more efficient but is bad for your yard. With rain and dew, the leaves can cause mold to grow on the grass. This will kill a healthy yard. Also, wet leaves are much harder to rake than dry ones. So get out there every weekend and remove fallen leaves. Discard the leaves in accordance with your local regulations. Some cities provide or sell leaf bags, some require clear plastic lawn and leaf bags. In some areas, the city asks homeowners to rake all leaves into the gutters and then a huge vacuum truck comes by two or three times during the season to suck up all the leaves.
It’s also a good idea, if you have a mulcher, to shred the leaves and use them for mulch in your flower beds and around shrubs like compost.
Before discarding the raked leaves, let the kids jump around in the leaf pile. It is one of my fondest memories of a New England childhood!
