A Will Was the Best Gift My Parents Ever Gave Me

My Parents Made a Will When They Were in Their 40s

My dad was a planner.  He went to his attorney when he was in his 40s and made a will.  When he told me and my two brothers about this we thought ew, who wants to talk about that.  My mom sent us each a letter with the name and address of their attorney, their accountant, their financial guru and their funeral home.  These were the important people in their lives.  They wanted us kids to know who they were and how to get in touch with them.  We were instructed to put the letter away for the day when we needed to get in touch with these people.  We were told what was in their will.  I, for one, never gave it another thought past how weird it was to make a will when they were still so young.

I’m Glad My Parents Planned Ahead With Their Will

Luckily, both parents lived until they were over 90.Chesapeake Va, Chesapeake Virginia, Norfolk VA, Norfolk Virginia, Virginia Beach VA, Virginia Beach Virginia  They died exactly 60 days apart several years ago.  It was a terrifically emotional summer for me and my two brothers.  But my dad’s planning made all of the administrative parts of their passing totally easy.  They had prepaid for their funeral arrangements and had told us in no uncertain terms how they wanted to be treated.

We knew they did not want any extraordinary medical measures to be used on them at the end.  We called the attorney and she handled everything and coordinated with the accountant and the financial guru.  I should say that none of us kids lived in Florida where my parents lived out their retirements so this was all done long distance.

We were all so relieved that there were no decisions to be made at the end.  I came home and immediately set out to give the same gift to my step children and other family.  My will is in place, my funeral paid for and all my final wishes have been made known to my brothers and step daughters.

Do your family a huge favor and give them the gift of your final wishes.  Start with an attorney who specializes in elder law.  You will feel at peace after taking care of these things for your family.
